Department of Geography

The department of Geography in Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri college was set up in June,2003 as a separate department for offering a general course at the undergraduate level and also for creating provisions for offering honours course in future. This department started with one full –time teacher. The total number of seats is 40.

In a brief period of eight months the department has undertaken one socio-economic survey on slum dwellers in the fringe areas of Kolkata. Besides this, the facility to offer individual counseling to the weaker students has also been developed. It proposes to bring out a quarterly newsletter shortly. The department organized a seminar on global warming where the students were the main speakers. The department has a well-equipped map laboratory where recent Topographical Sheets and other thematic maps are available. In this laboratory, students can also prepare thematic maps.

The department proposes to offer placement assistance to its out-going students. It will be in the form of (i)preparing students to face interview; (ii) guide the students for school service commission examination and (iii) offering guidance in the form of providing information for different job opportunities.
