The department of Bengali started functioning from its inception with elective Bengali in the pass course. A number of eminent teachers graced the department. The honours course was introduced in the year 1994 due to the earnest effort of the then Teacher-in-Charge of Dr. Somendra Narayan Chaudhuri and with the active co-operation of Sri Banadev Mukherjee and Sri Rabi Roy . The department was then helped by a number of part-time teachers.
