Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri College started functioning from June 1965 as a coeducational Institution. Since very inception of the Department with the affiliation of teaching undergraduate (pass) course in Science of Calcutta University in the session 1968-1969, we have been striving for upgradation of the Department. In the process, we have been able to win over the approval of Calcutta University of introducing the Honours Course from the session 1991-1992. We are moving forward with utmost effort for improvement imparting standard and quality teaching. In this regard, our college authority has extended its full cooperation.

We undertake to upgrade teaching standard by participating in various programmes like Orientation Course, Refresher Course, Workshops, Symposia etc. The Department has a seminar library for the use of the teachers and the students of the Department. Side by side the class room teaching, the students of the Department are encouraged in co-curricular activities like Seminar Presentation, Submission of Annual Assignment, Group Discussion, Debate etc.

One-day UGC Sponsored National Level Seminar “Indian Chemical Industries: Retrospect and Prospect”

Indian chemical industry has a strong and diversified base encompassing many areas such as organic and inorganic chemicals, plastics, fibres, dye stuffs, paints, pesticides, insecticides, specialty chemicals, drugs and pharmaceuticals. The growth in this sector has consistently been higher than the average rate of growth in the manufacturing sector in India. The current annual turnover in the chemical sector is around Rs. 90,000 crore of which roughly one-third is contributed by each of the three main sub-sectors, namely, chemicals, petrochemicals and pharmaceuticals.

Future Plans

To examine how to attain 100% success rate both in the Honours and General Course in all University Examinations.

We want to establish the Department as one of the best in Calcutta University.

To achieve this goal steps should be taken for are Intake of Quality students, Monitoring of attendance of the students on regular basis, Increase in the number of teaching members and laboratory attendants. Given the way the syllabus is changing the Department feels that purchase of a UV-VIS Spectrophotometer is inevitable, Acid-Proof covering on the top of all working table of the chemical, Proper drainage of the waste water should be done, preferably by porcelain bed. Installation of A.C  is essential for proper up keeping of sophisticated instruments.

Teaching: Chalk and Talk method and assisting the students to consult e-books from the library.
